While cheating is considered taboo, it’s common occurrence, with about 60 percent of men and 45 percent of women cheating. But even more surprising than these numbers are the reasons why so many people choose to do the dirty.

No, people don’t cheat just because there’s a lack of romance in their relationship. The reasons, some outlined by a recent article published by Medical Daily, are much more involved than that.

So, throw out every stereotype you know about infidelity, and check out these eight astonishing facts:

1- What’s love got to do with it?

Contrary to popular beliefs that cheaters are no longer in love with their spouses, a recent Rutgers University found 56 percent of men and 34 percent of women who cheated are still happily married. This study suggests the real reasons for infidelity go beyond just a simple lack of romance.

2- Young people label online flirting as cheating.

Chatting on Facebook might seem harmless, but not to some. According to Fusion’s Massive Millennial Poll, among people ages 18-34, 88 percent of women and 77 percent of men consider online chatting to be cheating. So be careful who you talk to online.

3- Cheating men may be more likely to get heart attacks.

If a man breaks your metaphorical heart by cheating, his physical heart could face the consequences. A Journal of Sexual Medicine study found that fatal and non-fatal heart attacks in men are more frequent when they are with a mistress instead of their spouse. Hopefully the mistress can speed dial 9-1-1.

4. Divorce is not always linked to cheating.

While there have been marriages decimated by a cheating spouse, it is not the number one reason for divorce. Instead, basic incompatibility is the biggest cause of divorce, according to a study by Certified Divorce Financial Analyst professionals.

5. Infidelity might fix a broken marriage.

You read that right.  Charles J. Orlando, author of The Problem with Women…Is Men told Women’s Day, “Men realize who they want for the rest of their lives, and that the new relationship isn’t as perfect as they thought.” Sometimes the grass is always greener on the other side.

6. A true “hump day” for cheating.

Wednesdays from between 5 and 7 p.m. is considered to the most popular time to cheat. So if you want to catch your cheating spouse in the act, you now know when.

7. In France, cheating isn’t that bad.

Whereas having an affair is considered off-limits for much of the Western World, this is not the case for many in France.  According to a recent Pew research poll, 84 percent of Americans believe cheating is “morally unacceptable,” while only 47 percent of French people seem to have a problem with it. Oui-oui!

8. For ladies, it might be in the genes.

Instead of blaming your partner for cheating, perhaps you should blame their family. At least that’s what researchers conducting a recent Finnish study said when they discovered a link between infidelity and “specific mutations of a receptor gene” for Vasopressin — a hormone that motivates sexual behavior, specifically in women. Note: While inherited genetics were found to influence unfaithful behavior, researchers say their findings are inconclusive and require more research.
